Pregnancy is an extraordinary journey that asks a great deal of the body. Over nine months the centre of gravity shifts, ligaments soften and the pelvis prepares for birth. Osteopathy supports these changes with gentleness and efficacy.
Why consult during pregnancy?
The hormonal and mechanical changes of pregnancy place real demands on the body:
- Lower back and pelvic pain — linked to the shift in centre of gravity
- Pubic pain (SPD) — separation of the pubic symphysis under the influence of relaxin
- Pregnancy-related sciatica — nerve compression by the baby or pelvis
- Reflux and nausea — common digestive complaints, especially early on
- Heavy legs and swelling — more difficult venous and lymphatic return
Techniques adapted to pregnancy
I never use direct or high-velocity manipulations during pregnancy. Techniques are specifically adapted:
- Gentle mobilisation of the pelvis and sacrum — to prepare for birth
- Work on the diaphragm — to improve breathing and reduce reflux
- Myofascial work on the round ligaments — to ease pelvic pain
- Craniosacral osteopathy — deeply calming, with no contraindications in pregnancy
Preparing for birth
In the final weeks, osteopathy can help to:
- Check the mobility of the obstetric pelvis
- Optimise the baby's position in the uterus
- Release tension in the perineum and uterine ligaments
When to begin?
At any point during pregnancy, depending on what's needed. An initial session in the second trimester and a birth-preparation session around week 35 are often recommended.
