Pregnancy makes deep demands on the body. Lower back pain, heavy legs, tight shoulders, fatigue: prenatal massage offers welcome relief through every trimester.

Is it safe?

Yes — performed by a trained therapist, prenatal massage is safe and beneficial throughout pregnancy. A few precautions apply:

  • Positioning — lying on your side, supported by cushions; never face-down nor flat on your back
  • Pressure — moderate, never deep on the abdomen or lower back
  • Points avoided — certain acupressure points on the ankles and calves are bypassed as a precaution

In high-risk pregnancies (pre-eclampsia, placenta praevia, threatened preterm birth), medical clearance is required.

What prenatal massage offers

  • Pain relief — lower back pain, sciatica, pelvic pain
  • Less swelling — by supporting venous and lymphatic return
  • Better sleep — deep relaxation eases falling asleep
  • Lower stress and anxiety — pregnancy is an emotionally intense time
  • Preparing for touch — helps some expectant mothers reconnect with bodily sensation

What a session looks like

The session starts with a brief chat about how you're feeling, any pains, and your questions. I make sure you're comfortable by adjusting the cushions.

The massage itself lasts 50 to 60 minutes. I use gentle techniques (effleurage, light kneading) on the back, hips, legs and shoulders. The oil I use is mild and suited to pregnancy-sensitive skin.

How often?

One session a month in the second trimester, then every two weeks in the third trimester is an ideal rhythm. In the final weeks, some mothers-to-be prefer to come weekly.
