Paediatric osteopathy covers a long stretch of development — from birth to the end of growth. At each stage, the body has its own specifics that shape both assessment and treatment.
The infant (0–18 months)
At this age, I mainly use craniosacral techniques and very gentle mobilisations. Common reasons for consultation include colic, torticollis, feeding and sucking difficulties and plagiocephaly (flat-head).
The first priority is building trust with the baby and the parents. The session often takes place with the baby in your arms or lying on a secure, low table.
The child (2–10 years)
Typical reasons to consult:
- Recurring ear infections and chronic rhinitis
- Muscular pain after falls or sports
- Concentration difficulties (sometimes linked to cranial tension)
- Recurrent abdominal pain
- Sleep difficulties
At this age, I adapt how I speak so the child understands and takes part in the session. I explain everything I do in simple words.
The adolescent (11–18 years)
Rapid growth often brings with it:
- Growing pains (knees, back)
- Postural imbalances linked to screens and heavy school bags
- Muscle tension after sport
- Scoliosis that needs watching
What parents should know
- Techniques are always age-appropriate — never abrupt manipulations
- Sessions last 30 to 45 minutes for infants, 45 to 60 minutes for older children
- Results are often visible quickly in younger children
- A parent stays present throughout the entire session
