What is the Lymphatic System?
Our body consists of several complex systems that regulate our bodily functions and maintain our overall well-being. The most well-known systems are the nervous and blood systems, which work together as interconnected highways throughout the body. However, this complex network of connections also generates a lot of waste, and that's where the lymphatic system comes into play.
The lymphatic system is responsible for removing waste from our bodies. It consists of a network of highways, just like the blood and nervous systems, but it also includes connection centers called lymph nodes. During an infection or illness, these nodes can become swollen due to an increase in abnormal activity as the body produces a large amount of waste.
So why do people undergo lymphatic drainage?
Lymphatic drainage has two main benefits: an aesthetic benefit and a health benefit.
Over time, our bodies can accumulate excess liquids due to various factors, such as consuming too much salt, lack of physical activity, or genetics that promote water retention. This accumulation of fluid is often visible in the legs, stomach, or arms and can cause swelling or a feeling of heaviness. Lymphatic drainage can help reduce swelling by activating the elimination of accumulated fluids and waste through the lymphatic system. Once the excess fluid is eliminated, the feeling of heaviness disappears. After a lymphatic drainage session, it's not uncommon to see differences of several centimeters in waist or thigh circumference. While impressive results may not appear after every session, the lymphatic system continues to work for several days following activation, so extra centimeters may be lost in the days following the session.
Regular lymphatic drainage is also recommended for its second effect: its positive impact on health! Even if you don't suffer from water retention, it's important to undergo regular drainage in the event of digestive disorders or to boost your immune system. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in eliminating waste from the body and sometimes requires a little extra help. Prevention is often the best medicine.
A few tips for the days following your lymphatic drainage session:
Drink plenty of water! Drinking at least 2 liters of water per day can increase your renal activity, which will boost your treatment.
Go to bed early! A good night's sleep begins early, and nighttime is when your organs work the hardest. Not all schedules are created equal.
Engage in intense physical activity! The more your heart rate increases, the more efficiently your cleaning stations (such as your lymphatic system, kidneys, and liver) filter out waste.
Avoid alcohol, which slows down your cleaning organs and promotes water retention.
